DIRECT BILIRUBIN (AKA CONJUGATED BILIRUBIN)

A direct hyperbilirubinemia is defined as having a direct bilirubin level that is >2 mg/dL, although >1 mg/dL is used as the threshold when evaluating cholestasis in a young infant. Most of the common newborn jaundice issues are due to an indirect hyperbilirubinemia. These direct hyperbilirubinemias are the dangerous ones of the two types.
