DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES THROUGH ADOLESCENCE

DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES SCREENING TOOLS

The ABP initial certification exam will require you to know about more development screening tools than just the Denver. A few are listed here for your review.

  • PEDS: Developmental Milestones (PEDS:DM): Newer tool. Parent and physician versions are available. Both screening and assessment levels are available. This may be used in children 0-8 years of age to assess the major developmental categories (gross motor, fine motor, expressive language, receptive language, self-help, and social-emotional). For older children, it can also be used to screen for reading and math problems.
  • BAYLEY NEURODEVELOPMENTAL SCREEN (BINS): Used in children 3-24 months of age. This is often used in premature infants. It assesses neurologic processes, neurodevelopmental skills, and developmental accomplishment reflexes via DIRECT OBSERVATION of tone, movement, symmetry, object permanence, imitation, and language.
  • CHILD DEVELOPMENT INVENTORIES or CHILD DEVELOPMENT REVIEW: Used in children 3-73 months of age. This screens major developmental areas via a PARENT QUESTIONNAIRE.
  • DENVER DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING TEST II (DDST-II): Use in children 1 month to 6 years of age. This is used as a primary screen for possible developmental problems and to monitor children at risk for developmental problems. Some also use this objective tool to confirm suspected problems, but the sensitivity is lower than other more detailed (and time-consuming tools).
  • AGES AND STAGES QUESTIONNAIRE (ASQ): Used in children 2-54 months of age. This is used to screen for developmental delays through a parent or caregiver QUESTIONNAIRE. It covers five developmental areas: communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social interactions.
